Pippa had returned home and was preparing the car to leave Burlybottom on Sea to question this man. While she was certain that the police would be on the case it might be a while until they found out this information, and if she could find out the truth then at least she could put Katriona’s mind at rest. However, just as she was about to leave she realized that she might well be going to meet a killer, and going alone, even with Jasper, was not a sensible thing to do. When she thought of taking a gun from her grandfather’s collection she suffered a painful flashback to what had happened the last time. The thought that she had shot a man had burrowed deep into her soul and made her feel wholly inadequate. Even after she had found out that the gun had been filled with blanks it hadn’t stopped her from reliving that moment, and she wasn’t keen to repeat the moment. She had come within a whisker of death too, only saved by the slickness of the ground, and she could not count on that again. She knew she could not go there alone, and there was only one man she trusted to go with her.

Jasper was sitting in the passenger seat of the car as she drove to the farm. The wide fields opened up, stretching across the world like a blanket. She pulled up next to a tractor and breathed in the earthy smell of mud and compost. She heard a chicken squawk in the distance, while sheep bleated, and the proud cows chewed their cud.

Jack wore wellington boots that were flecked with dried mud, thick trousers, and a woolen jumper. He smiled when Pippa got out of the car.

“Hello Pippa, what can I do for you? Have you come to sample some of my delicious cheese again?” he asked.

“No, I’ve actually come to ask you a favor,” she said, and duly explained the situation. When Jack learned of the dead body he paled and rubbed his chin. He took off his flat cap and held it against his heart for a moment, looking up toward the sky.

“Rest his soul,” he muttered under his breath before putting his cap back on. “I can’t believe that something like this has happened in our small town. And you say it was an arrow?”

“Yes, sticking right out of his neck. He was going hunting, and Justine gave me the name of the man he was supposed to be going hunting with. He might know what happened, if this was an accident or… something worse.”

Jack frowned. “Shouldn’t the police take care of this?”

“The police take time. They have their procedure and paperwork and due process. That’s even if they’re going to be able to look into it properly. I can’t tell you how many stories there are of police corruption and neglect and ineptitude. Sometimes it’s a wonder that any crimes get solved, and if we leave it up to them it could be a long time before Katriona gets any answers, and she deserves closure.
